The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) started as a comic book in 1984 by two individuals, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The comic has since evolved into the pop culture titan we know today. We find that, frequently, TMNT fans come to /r/TMNT asking for advice on how and where to start reading the comic series. With over 30 years of comic book history behind them (and hopefully many more ahead) it’s not an easy undertaking to start from scratch with TMNT, but that’s where this Primer comes in. Our goal is for this to be a quick and easy-to-reference Primer to help fans start (or continue) their journey in the world of Ninja Turtle comics, no matter which iteration you’re looking for. If you're not sure which series is for you, here are some pointers to help you out. Here is a list of the 7 iterations of the TMNT comic, with more detailed descriptions further down:

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Tales of the TMNT (Mirage)

• 1984-2014

The Mirage series is the one that started it all. Everything Turtles comes from this series. The Mirage turtles are darker, grittier and a little more strange than other iterations of the franchise. This is the series Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird started, but it was written and drawn by many other contributors throughout the years, so there are a wide range of styles present across the books. 30 years of history and two concurrent titles have left a daunting labyrinth of issues, specials, microseries, miniseries and crossovers. Originally, the series was published in Black & White. Purists of the series believe that this is the way it should be read, as it truly represents the art style, but there have been color adaptations over time.

The two series are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is the main series, as well as Tales of the TMNT, which is considered side stores.

How to read it: When it comes to the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic there are many ideas about what to read and in what order to do it, but the main thing for a first time reader is not to over complicate things or worry too much. The timeline can be confusing, but a good rule of thumb is to read them in order of publication date, which you can find easily on the Mirage Licensing website or the TMNTPedia page. We recommend following publication date because TMNT is notorious for having side issues (e.g., Micro-Series, specials) that parallel the main story. Since these are often not numbered, they can easily be forgotten. Be aware, however, that a large chunk of Volume 1 (mostly issues 22 and 44) are part of the 'guest era' which featured non-canon stories by guest creators that don't advance the narrative at all.

The same rule of reading by publication date applies to the Tales of the TMNT comic as well; you can even read them along with the main TMNT series as they were being published at the same time. Just remember the Tales of the TMNT books were usually short one-off stories that didn't affect the narrative of the main TMNT books and reading them is not necessary to follow along with that story.

In addition to the Mirage website, TMNT Entity has an in-depth continuity timeline of the Mirage Turtles universe as well as a more comprehensive explanation of the history of these books here. This is not a recommended reading order for a first time reader, but their Mirage comics section is a great resource for more information on individual issues as well as the series as a whole.

Where to find it: If you are looking to read the original comics, it can be a bit confusing. There have been various reprints of the comic series, but it is very hard to read all of the issues in one place. Only certain issues are deemed to be part of the 'main story' with lesser important issues being left out. IDW Publishing has started collecting and reprinting old stories that they consider part of the 'main story'. Below is a list of the full run of the Mirage comic series. Next to each issue, there is an indicator to show which collections feature that issue. Some of the comics never made it into the collections, but you should be able to find most of the ones worth reading.

Mirage not only published the regular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, but they also published an additional series entitled Tales of the TMNT, which highlighted some of the lesser. Tales of the TMNT ran for 70 issues, and an additional #71 issue was created by fans to better complete the story. IDW Publishing has collected the Tales of the TMNT in the following volumes:

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures (Archie Comics)

• 1988-1996

• 72 main issues

• About 125 total issues including microseries/miniseries/crossovers/specials

For something closer to the original cartoon read Archie Comics’ TMNT Adventures. This comic started as a pretty straightforward adaptation of episodes of the cartoon, but eventually spun off into its own independent—and wildly successful—series.

How to read it: This series is more straightforward than the Mirage run. Like the other iterations the microseries/miniseries/crossovers/spinoffs/specials aren’t essential, but will provide background on the world and characters. Here are a couple of guides on how to read it in either chronological order or by release date.

Where to find it: Like with the Mirage series, IDW has begun releasing collections of the TMNT: Adventures comics.

Miscellaneous Series Worth Mentioning

TMNT Odyssey

An IndieGoGo campaign entitled TMNT Odyssey was created as a stand-alone graphic novel by Andrew Modeen. Only 260 softcover books were printed, but the story is available to read here. Note: This graphic novel was released with permission by Modeen and is a free and legal. This story is non-canon, but is really fun. It should be read after the final Mirage comic, but anyone with vague familiarity with the TMNT comics can read and enjoy.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Dreamwave)

• 2003

• 7 main issues

Dreamwave, a Candaian publishing company, began to publish a comic series based on the 2003 4Kids cartoon series. The series abruptly came to a stop after 7 issues, so this is a very short run.

Where to find it: It is easiest to read the single issues for this series since there are so few. These issues have not been collected into a trade, and the issues are frequently sold together on eBay.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 3 (Image Comics)

• 1996-1999

• 23 main issues (issues 24 and 25 exist, but are part of a fan project)

After the first two volumes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Image acquired the rights and published a third volume that was more mature and violent. This volume was later completely ignored (i.e., retconned) when Mirage re-acquired the title for Volume 4. The issues published by Image, including microseries, miniseries, crossovers and specials are considered non-canon. We did not provide links to trades, mostly because they are generally hard to find and very expensive.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 4 (Mirage)

• 2001-2009

• 32 main issues

• 16 additional issues including miniseries

At the end of 2001 Mirage launched vol. 4 of the TMNT, with the story picking up where the events of vol. 2 had left off. Volume 3 from Image had been declared non-cannon. This story follows the turtles as they have grown from teenagers into adults. Each turtle is also featured in a 4-part miniseries, which ties into the continuity of the story. The series ends, incomplete, with the last 4 issues having been limited to 1000 copies each and sold by mail order. Issues #32 & #31 were published out of order in 2014 and 2015 for FCBD, and were previously only available to be read online at Peter Laird's blog.

How to read it: The story is straightforward. The main title can be read, following the plot while the miniseries add more detail and depth to the story. While not necessary, the miniseries are highly recommended reading in addition to the main title.

Where to find it: Unfortunately these books have not been reprinted and neither have they been collected in trade. Some issues may yet be ordered directly from Mirage, while others will need to be found from other sources such as online sales, comic book stores, etc.. As noted above, several issues were published digitally and can be read for free still on Peter Laird's blog.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW Publishing)

• 2011-Present

• 80+ main issues

• 175+ issues total including microseries/miniseries/crossovers/spinoffs/specials

This is the current main TMNT comic in production. It stands alone from all other iterations, but draws inspiration from just about every version of the turtles as well as introducing some new twists to the Turtle mythos. If you’re here for some crazy awesome Turtle comic story arc that you read about online this is most likely what you’re looking for. It’s more adult than TMNT Adventures or TMNT: New Animated Adventures, but still appropriate for a teen audience.

How to read it: Luckily this one is pretty straightforward. Like the other series reading only the main issues will provide the plot, but the Micro-Series and miniseries issues add a lot of backstory and are occasionally referenced in the main story issues. Also like the other series TMNT Entity has a chronological reading list and I highly recommend following this one. So far IDW has been releasing them pretty much in chronological order so this list will closely mirror the release dates for the comics. This series is based on, and fits in the timeline of, the current Nickelodeon cartoon. It's much more light-hearted than the other series. This is definitely a comic series aimed at kids. This title has come to an end with issue #24, but will be continued in a new title: TMNT: Amazing Adventures.

How to read it: This series is a very straightforward series. No miniseries/microseries/crossovers to worry about, just the main monthly issues.

7. TMNT Amazing Adventures (IDW Publishing)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures was cancelled in 2015 after 24 issues. TMNT Amazing Adventures is a reboot of the same genre of comic. This series is still based on the current Nickelodeon cartoon, but works to both build itself up and separate itself from the cartoon. There are new characters and plots, but it is still similar style to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures.

How to read it: This series is a very straightforward series. No miniseries/microseries/crossovers to worry about, just the main monthly issues.

8. TMNT Universe (IDW Publishing)

• 2016-Present

• 20+ main issues

The main IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic has a ton of characters. In order to supplement the series by adding more story, there are numerous miniseries. TMNT Universe was created to give a monthly tie-in comic that parallels the main series. TMNT Universe takes place after Issue #50 of the main IDW comic.
