‘My name is August.
I won’t describe to you what I look like.
Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.’

Ten-year-old August Pullman wants to be ordinary. He does ordinary things. He eats ice-cream. He plays on his Xbox. He feels ordinary – inside.

But Auggie is far from ordinary. Born with a terrible facial abnormality, he has been home-schooled by his parents his entire life, in an attempt to protect him from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, Auggie’s parents are sending him to a real school. Can he convince his new classmates that he’s just like them, underneath it all?

Narrated by Auggie and the people around him whose lives he touches, Wonder is a frank, funny, astonishingly moving debut to be read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

How could we ignore the book our site members have called 'riveting', 'one of the most profound and beautifully written books I have read in a long time', 'a miracle of a book'? Described as a 'disturbing read' by SophieScribe, Wonder by RJ Palacio is nevertheless an inspiring one; The Dormouse guarantees that no matter how sad this 'bold, funny and engaging' book makes you, it will leave any reader feeling better'. Think The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, but appropriate for slightly younger readers.

As the new edition with unseen material is released to coincide with a companion book, 365 Days of Wonder, there will be more than plenty for the book club to discuss – and as so many of you have read the book before, we expect the discussions to be loud and frenetic!

How to enter

Ten teen readers, this book could be yours! Just enter the prize draw by filling in the form on this page. Entrants must be between 13 and 17 years of age. After the draw closes at midnight on Tuesday 9 September we will pick 10 winners at random, who will each receive a copy of both the books. Good luck!

Wonder by RJ Palacio

My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.

Auggie wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things: eating ice cream, playing on his Xbox. He feels ordinary – inside. But ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids aren't stared at wherever they go.

Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school – and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted, but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all?

And you can get an edition featuring the brand new chapter by bully Julian, along with the new compendium of wonderful wisdom for every day of the year, so even if you've read it before this is a chance not to be missed!
